First choose one recording from the “Tin-Pan Alley” playlist and analyze what you hear in detail. Treat two elements of the song separately: composition, and interpretation.
Composition: What is the form of the song, and how would you describe the difference between one part of the form and another? Please describe the song in detail, focusing on the sung melody. Do the lyrics of the song and its melody, seem to confirm any of what we have learned in class about the jazz age, or (optionally) the ideas in Lawrence Levine’s discussion of the culture of 1930s?
Interpretation: How is the song interpreted? Do the feelings or expressions of the singer change in any way from one part of the song to another, helping to reinforce your sense of the whole song’s meaning? Try to recognize any aspects of the song that are treated in a special way in the recording you’ve chosen — it may be helpful to find other versions of the song, in order to grasp what elements are common across all interpretations, as opposed to those that are unique to the interpretation you’re analyzing.

The goal of this project is to find examples of interior design students’ portfolios and evaluate their effectiveness at communicating the skillset shown in their projects. You must select students’ portfolio examples, not professional designers’ portfolios or websites.
REQUIRED CONSIDERATIONS:
Things to consider include:
1. Is there an obvious concept or overall theme that helps the portfolio to appear cohesive?
2. How many projects are included?
3. How extensive are the projects? Are they small or large in scope?
4. Is there a variety of styles and types of work present?
5. Are several skills represented? What are these?
6. Does the designer show the conceptual process?
7. How is the portfolio organized?
8. How are individual pages formatted?
9. What components/elements are included on a typical page?
10. How are graphic elements used?
11. Is there an appropriate amount of description or identifying text for projects or images?
12. Are there spelling errors?
13. What is the most impressive project or skill?
14. What is the least impressive project or skill?
15. Is the overall impression positive or negative? Summarize or make a conclusion.
16. Oral Presentation – clean and legible slide, eye contact, etc.
Include any other questions or ideas you may have about the portfolio you reviewed.
DELIVERABLES

Author’s Biography
Wayson Choy was born on April 20, 1939, in Vancouver as the only son of two working parents. His mother was a meat-cutter and sausage stuffer; he was told his father was a cook aboard CPR ships. At age six he moved to an Edwardian house at 630 Keefer Street and thereafter was cared for in a variety of Chinese Canadian households, often dreaming of becoming a cowboy. He was the first Chinese Canadian to enroll in a Creative Writing class at UBC, taught by Earle Birney. At UBC he began writing a short story which would be turned into his best-known novel some 30 years later. The Jade Peony has been anthologized more than 25 times.
Wayson Choy moved to Toronto in 1962. He emerged foremost among Chinese Canadian fiction writers for his novel The Jade Peony (1995), an inter-generational saga about an immigrant family, the Chens, during the Depression. It was selected as the co-winner of the 1996 Trillium Prize (along with Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace). The Jade Peony also won the City of Vancouver Book Award and spent 26 weeks on the Globe & Mail’s bestseller list. The Jade Peony has been anthologized more than 25 times. The Jade Peony was followed by Paper Shadows: A Memoir of a Past Lost and Found (1999), mostly about his childhood. Paper Shadows won the Edna Staebler Creative Non-Fiction Award and was shortlisted for a Governor General’s Award, the Charles Taylor Prize and the Drainie-Taylor Biography Prize.
